    The Process
      The Phone
Each phone is purchased cash and with no contractual obligations. In order for the phone to work a 'Starter Pack' is purchased and the phone activated with a number. The phone is now fully functional and can make and receive calls. Each of the final 7 pieces has their own unique number.

All artwork was created on the APWC phone. This phone is linked to a contract and thus can use the networks GPRS functionality. The final pieces with the starter packs do not have this functionality for protection of the work. Should the buyer which to use the phone as his/her daily working phone, this can be done. The phone is not network or country blocked. The buyer would simply insert their existing SIM card into the phone to activate the piece.

      Artwork
Richard created the seven artworks using the sketch function within the Jotter. The Jotter has limited capabilities and only 16 colours. The original artwork is created on the phone and emailed in 16 colour gif format to the print shop (Meintjies Digital) for giclee prints. The artwork is sent via email and GPRS from the phone to a normal email account. The printer then prints off the edition on giclee. Richard instructs the printer to print the exact image. No colour touch ups are done by the printer. This ensures the imperfections of the medium come through. Richard also keeps a digital 'Artists Proof" which will all be destroyed once the edition is complete.

The files are then copied back to the phone from computer via USB port. The artworks are stored in the picture section in gif format. The phone will not allow gif files to be edited in the picture section, thus, the gifs, in the picture section, becoming the final artwork on the phone.

Low quality jpeg copies of the artwork are also created and stored on the phone for the buyer to send to friends as copies of the work, thus retaining the originals gif files on the phone. jpeg files are low quality and cannot be printed.

      Other Media
A selection of paintings, videos, and event photos from the artist career has also been installed on the final piece. A screensaver has also been installed. The artist Biography and information about the art he creates is also installed on the phone.

A limited edition of 7 T-shirts plus one artist proof accompanies each artwork with the edition on the label. This is not part of the piece, it is for promotional purposes.
